Eleuthère Irénée du Pont papers

Abstract:

Éleuthère Irénée du Pont de Nemours (1771–1834) was a French American chemist and industrialist who founded the gunpowder manufacturer, E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. E.I. du Pont married Sophie Dalmas du Pont (1775-1828) in 1791, and the couple had eight children, one of whom died in infancy. This collection primarily consists of E.I. du Pont's personal and business correspondence; writings and notes; school materials; memoranda on manufactures and tariffs; legal agreements; patents; and land surveys. Also included are Sophie Dalmas du Pont's correspondence and household account records.

Upper Louviers was a residence located on the east bank of the Brandywine Creek in Brandywine Hundred, Delaware, opposite the powder mills of E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Elise du Pont Elrick (1902-1984), who lived at Upper Louviers as a child, was an architect and translator. This collection consists of architectural drawings of the residence made by Elise du Pont Elrick in 1936.

Elise Simons du Pont (1849-1919) was the wife of Francis Gurney du Pont (1850-1904), a vice president of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company. The records consist of itemized household receipts, primarily from three Wilmington, Delaware grocers and one from John Wanamaker's department store in Philadelphia. The receipts give descriptions of goods and prices.

Ernest du Pont (1880-1944) and his elder brother Francis Irenee du Pont (1873-1942) founded the U.S.F. Powder Company in 1919, which produced flashless cannon powder. This item is a cabinet card photograph of Ernest du Pont (1880-1944) as a young child.

Eugene du Pont Jr. (1873-1954) was a director of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company from 1917 until 1954, and a great grandson of company founder, Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834). The collection contains the personal papers of Eugene du Pont, Jr., and the records of the Kinloch Gun Club, a private shooting club which he founded. It also contains a separate collection of correspondence between his brother Alfred I. du Pont, vice president and general manager of the DuPont Company, with his assistant Frank L. Connable, which is an important source for the history of the company in the early 1900s.

Eugene du Pont Jr. (1873-1954) was a director of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company from 1917 until 1954, and a great grandson of company founder, Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834). The papers of Eugene du Pont Jr. include reports to the DuPont Company Board of Directors by the executive committee and the treasurer of the DuPont Company. In addition, there are several copies of letters to du Pont family members.

Eugene du Pont (1840-1902) was the eldest son of Alexis I. du Pont (1816-1857) and Joanna Smith du Pont (1815-1876) and joined the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., eventually rising to president in 1899. The bulk of the papers in this small collection are letters sent to Eugene du Pont by his mother while he was in school in Philadelphia from 1857 to 1859.

Eugene Eleuthère du Pont (1882-1966) was an industrialist and a descendant of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) and his son, Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), who founded E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in 1802, a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company. He attended Harvard University from 1899 to 1903, graduating with an A.B. degree before joining the family business. Eugene E. du Pont kept this scrapbook during his years at Harvard, continuing to the year of his world travels. There are a few pieces relating to the Harvard Class of 1903. However, the bulk of the material consists of articles, particularly poetry.

The collection consists primarily of correspondence from du Pont to his wife, Elise Wigfall Simons (1849-1919), but include items from other family members, as well as a journal of du Pont's, manuscripts written by him, and plays and novels by Alice Simons (1849-1891).

Francis “Frank” Pierre Gentieu (1876-1950) was a ballistic engineer at E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. Gentieu worked at DuPont's Carney's Point Plant in New Jersey from 1901 to 1941. This small collection contains an account by Gentieu entitled "The First Fifty Years at Carney's Point" (1891-1941); correspondence with du Pont family members; a list of his father Pierre Gentieu's photographs of the DuPont Company and Brandywine area; and a recollection written by Samuel Brown of a conversation with Sophie M. du Pont (1810-1888) related to the Brandywine Manufacturers Sunday School.

Gabriel Manigault papers

Gabriel Manigault (1758-1809) was a Charleston merchant, plantation owner, architect, and South Carolina state Representative. In 1805, Manigault sold part of his property in South Carolina and moved to Clifton, an estate near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These are copies of Manigault's letters relating to members of the du Pont family.

Gabrielle Josephine de La Fite de Pelleport (1770-1837) was the wife of Victor du Pont (1767-1827), a French American diplomat, politician, and businessman. He was the brother of Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), the founder of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. The account book is supposedly the household account book of du Pont and contains handwriting of various people, including her son Charles I. du Pont (1797-1869). Entries include purchases of coal, whiskey, soap, candles, and other items, as well as construction materials and tools.

Alfred Irénée du Pont (1864-1935) was the eldest son of E.I. du Pont (1829-1877). He joined the family gunpowder firm in 1884. Gabrielle Shubrick Crofton (1835-1894) was the daughter of Alfred I. du Pont's first cousin, Julia Sophia du Pont (1806-1882) and Irvine Shubrick (1797-1849). This collection consists of two individual portraits, one of Gabrielle Shubrick Crofton and the other of Alfred I. Du Pont.

The E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. Greta Barksdale Brown was the daughter of Ethel du Pont (1857-1934) and Hamilton M. Barksdale (1861-1918), and the wife of (Frank) Donaldson Brown (1885-1965). The collection consists of about a hundred hand-drawn nineteenth century embroidery patterns that she inherited from female family members.

The collection includes a mailing list for a booklet to commemorate the dinner, along with a booklet which lists those attending, describes the presentation of the gift, and includes the remarks prepared by du Pont.

Henry du Pont (1812-1889) was an American military officer and son of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), founder of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., and Sophie Madeleine Dalmas du Pont (1775-1828). The papers relating to du Pont's enrollment and time at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, including letters from Callender Irvine (1775-1841), Peter B. Porter (1773-1844), E.I. du Pont (1881-1834); du Pont's obituary as published in the 1890 annual reunion of the Association of Graduates Office at the Academy; and a roster of the West Point class of 1833.

Abstract:

Henry Miller (1845-1926) was first employed at the Brandywine Works of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. In 1922, he was one of the oldest surviving employees when he was interviewed by Alfred I. du Pont (1864-1935). In the interview, Miller describes the layout of the Brandywine Works as it changed over time, as well as the various apparatus and processes used in the manufacture of gunpowder and its constituent ingredients.
