Abstract

Gabrielle Josephine de La Fite de Pelleport (1770-1837) was the wife of Victor du Pont (1767-1827), a French American diplomat, politician, and businessman. He was the brother of Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), the founder of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. The account book is supposedly the household account book of du Pont and contains handwriting of various people, including her son Charles I. du Pont (1797-1869). Entries include purchases of coal, whiskey, soap, candles, and other items, as well as construction materials and tools.

Biographical Note

Gabrielle Josephine de La Fite de Pelleport (1770-1837) was the wife of Victor du Pont (1767-1827), a French American diplomat, politician, and businessman. He was the brother of Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), the founder of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company.

She was a daughter of Gabriel Rene de La Fite, the Marquis de Pelleport (d. 1781). She was educated at Versailles and at the Abbaye de Port Royal in Paris. Due to the Revolution, she went to Switzerland with other émigrés in 1790, but returned a year later. In 1794, she married Victor du Pont and a year later they came to the United States where he was appointed as consul at Charleston, South Carolina. They returned to France in 1798, but came back to the United States in 1800 with their children; his father, Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817); his brother, Éleuthère Irénée du Pont and his family.

Victor du Pont's family resided in Manhattan until 1806 when they moved to Anglica, Genesee County, New York, where he engaged in a land development project, operated a store, and established a tannery. In 1809, the family relocated to Delaware, settling near his brother. Victor and Josephine du Pont had give children, four surviving to adulthood: Amelie Elizabeth (1796-1869), Charles Irenee (1797-1869), Samuel Francis (1803-1865), and Julia Sophie (1806-1882).
