Scope and Contents
The bulk of the papers in this small collection are letters sent to Eugene du Pont by his mother while he was in school in Philadelphia from 1857 to 1859. She wrote to him about domestic matters, including her hobby of painting, plumbing for the house, family pets, taking food to the poor, and having dental work performed. There are also several letters to Eugene from his sister Frances "Fanny" du Pont dating from 1838 to 1902, and his cousin and future wife Amelia (Amy) du Pont dating from 1842 to 1917. There are a few letters to Eugene after he had joined the company and was living at Hagley House and his Civil War draft papers in 1863. There is also a printed copy of Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont's (1803-1865) funeral sermon in 1865.
