Scope and Contents

These are copies of letters of planter Gabriel Manigault of Charleston, South Carolina, relating to members of the du Pont family.

Five letters are to Victor Marie du Pont, dating from 1800 to 1804, regarding financial matters, investments in land (particularly in Washington, D.C.), and money deposited on account of General Lafayette. These are retained copies from Manigault's letter book.

Five items are correspondence dating from 1806 to 1807, with Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours and wih Jean François Champagne, Proviseur of the Lycée Impérial in Paris, regarding his son, Gabriel Henry Manigault, discussing his expenses, course of study, and problems attendant upon a young American student in Paris.

The collection also contains a page from the autobiography of William J. Grayson, South Carolina statesman, containing a reference to a schoolmate, Thomas J. Dupont of St. Luke's Parish, South Carolina.
