Biographical Note

Francis Victor du Pont (1894-1962) was a civil engineer and political figure in Delaware and Maryland. He was a descendant of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817), who founded the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company with his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) in 1802. E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company.

He was the eldest son of United States Senator T. Coleman du Pont (1863-1930) and Alice du Pont (1863-1937). He studied at Wilmington Friends School and The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. In 1917 he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He then worked as a flight instructor at the US School of Military Aeronautics at MIT before becoming a research engineer at the DuPont Company's Deepwater Point plant and the Cadillac plant in Detroit.

Francis Victor du Pont was a Delaware State Highway Commission member from 1922 to 1949. He was chairman of the commission and played a major role in developing, engineering, and constructing the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

He served as Commissioner of the US Bureau of Public Roads from 1953 to 1956, which led to the legislation authorizing the interstate road system to be constructed.

Scope and Content

This collection combines papers and memorabilia of Francis Victor du Pont and those of his parents and ancestors.

Francis Victor du Pont's papers focus primarily on his role as an engineer promoting better highways, his roles in Delaware Republican Party affairs, including his term as finance chairman. In the former category are papers relating to Coleman du Pont Road, Inc., which his father created to improve the present U.S. Route 13 as a gift to the state, the State Highway Department, the Bureau of Public Roads, the American Road Builders' Association, and two items on the building and dedication of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The second are focused on the period from 1949 to 1960, particularly the first Eisenhower-Nixon presidential campaign, with items on the reactions to Nixon's famous "Checkers" speech. Personal papers contain information on personal investments, family relationships, diplomas, clippings, and biographical notes.

Papers of T. Coleman du Pont deal primarily with two events, Coleman's sale of his DuPont Company stock to Pierre S. du Pont through the medium of the DuPont Securities Company and the extensive litigation brought by other family stockholders to block the sale and divide Coleman's interest proportionately, and his building of the Coleman du Pont Boulevard, later Coleman du Pont Highway. Among the latter is a large presentation book from the people of Delaware containing signatures and speeches commemorating the gift of the highway to the state in 1924.

Other family papers consist of random pieces from other extended du Pont family members dating back to 1804, including letters of Nicholas Van Dyke, Samuel Francis du Pont, family reminiscences relating to Admiral and Mrs. Samuel Francis du Pont, Mary Van Dyke du Pont, and others, including a copy of the New York American of October 12, 1824, concerning the visit of Marquis de Lafayette to Victor du Pont.
