Century of Progress miniature photographs

Abstract:

World's Fairs or International Expositions are large-scale exhibitions that highlight technology, agriculture and other innovations of national or cultural significance. The Chicago Century of Progress International Exposition was held along Lake Michigan and Northerly Island Park from May 27, 1933 to October 31, 1934. This collection contains twenty-five miniature views show landmarks in the city of Chicago and fourteen exterior views of different buildings and amusements at the 1933 Century of Progress exhibition.

St. Andrew's congregation was founded in 1829 in Wilmington, Delaware. This collection contains two Delaware Engagement Calendars, "Historical Edition 1638-1840" and "Historical Edition 1840-1905" for calendar years 1958 and 1959 respectively.

DuPont, Washington historic district nomination papers

Abstract:

DuPont, Washington, was built by E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company for the purpose of housing employees of its dynamite plant. The collection includes papers on the history of DuPont, specifically the nomination to the National Register, along with copies of newspaper clippings, maps, and reports related to the nomination.

Eleutherian Mills garden photographs and film

Abstract:

From 1802 to 1921, Eleutherian Mills was a gunpowder mill site used for the manufacture of explosives by the duPont family business. The name also refers to the house and gardens on the hill above the mills, which was the first duPont family home in America. This collections contains slides and color snapshot photographs of the garden at Eleutherian Mills. Also included is an 8 mm. home movie.

Firehouses and historic buildings of Wilmington photographs

Abstract:

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. The company was established in 1802 and began with the production of gunpowder. Collection consists of five photographs, four of which are exterior views of historic structures in Wilmington. Two fire companies are pictured, the Friendship Firehouse in the late 1800s and the fire station of Company No. 1

Frank R. Zebley photograph albums

Abstract:

Frank R. Zebley (1883-1960) was a Delaware native collector, photographer, author, and one-time speaker of the Delaware House of Representatives. He published Along the Brandywine and The Churches of Delaware. The Frank R. Zebley photograph albums includes nearly 1500 black and white photographs from the city of Wilmington, locations around Delaware, southeastern Pennsylvania, and other places of interest in the mid-Atlantic region.

John J. Raskob photographs

Abstract:

John Raskob (1879-1950) was a financial executive for the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. and General Motors, and builder of the Empire State Building. The collection primarily consists of construction progress photographs of the Durant Building in Detroit, Michighan in 1919 and 1920. There is a small set of images of a renovation at Raskob's Archmere estate in 1916, and a few portraits and snapshots of Raskob.

Maurice D'Onofrio collection of Johnson family postcards

Abstract:

The patriarch of the Johnson family of Cape May New Jersey was Eldridge Johnson (1838-1929), a prominent merchant, trustee of the Presbyterian Church, and president of the Cape May Saving Fund and Building Association. The Johnson family of Cape May resided at 225 Congress Place, a house which was moved to 33 Perry Street in the 1970s and is today known as the Pink House. This collection consists of postcards from a states in the United States and a few from Canada. The postcards depict landscapes, street scenes, prominent buildings and monuments, as well as Presbyterian Churches from a variety of cities. These postcards were sent to members of the Johnson family between 1910 and 1949.

The Morris family of Philadelphia were brewers, merchants, land speculators, manufacturers, and prominent participants in public affairs. This collection contains fourteen albums of photographs and postcards of foreign scenes between 1881 and 1906.

Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) bridge and trestle documents (copies)

Abstract:

The Pennsylvania Railroad Company was the largest railroad in the United States in terms of corporate assets and traffic from the last quarter of the nineteenth century until the decline of the northeast's and midwest's dominance of manufacturing. This collection consists of materials related to the Pennsylvania Railroad bridge and trestle near Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. There is a copy of an erection diagram from 1896 and a copy of the application for the bridge to be a historic site to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Place du Pont in Nemours, France photographs

Abstract:

Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) was a noted French Physiocrat and economic advisor to Jacques Necker and King Louis XVI. In 1784, Louis XVI made him a noble through the process of noblesse de lettres, which added the de Nemours suffix to his name. In the aftermath of the French Revolution he and his family emigrated to the United States where his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont established the gun powder manufacturer E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. These photographs show a close-up of the Place Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours metal plaque and the building on which it hangs in Nemours France, ancestral home of the du Pont family.

Scranton, Pennsylvania viewbook

Scranton is a small city in northeastern Pennsylvania. It sat on one of the largest deposits of hard anthracite coal in the country. The coal industry and railroad development led to a boon for the city in the ninteenth and early twentieth centuries. This twelve page booklet contains twenty-two colored, halftone photographs of buildings and sights in or near Scranton, Pennsylvania. Includes two pages of text. Illustrations appear to be reprinted postcard images.

Whitaker family photographs

The Whitaker family of Philadelphia founded and operated William Whitaker & Sons, Inc., one of the oldest Philadelphia textile mills. The collection consists of photographs related to the family of William Whitaker. A number of the photographs feature buildings and bridges in and around Cedar Grove, Pennsylvania, now a part of Philadelphia. William Whitaker's mansion is featured in several of these images, with family gathered on the porch.
