Historical Note
Scranton is a small city in northeastern Pennsylvania. It sat on one of the largest deposits of hard anthracite coal in the country. This fact and the development of the railroad led to a boon to the town in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By 1910 the population was approximately 130,000. After the Second World War, oil and natural gas replaced coal and Scranton went into decline economically and demographically. Since the 1980s, revitalization and renewed interest has helped stabilize and diversify the economy.
