Abstract:

Adolphe Amadee Fesquet (1833-1894) was a chemical engineer and the author of a number of textbooks and translated French technical works into English. The collection comprises four volumes of educational course notes from lectures on mechanics, metallurgical chemistry, architecture, and the Catholic faith.

Alexander Duer Irving Jr. papers

Abstract:

Alexander Duer Irving Jr. (1873-1941) was assigned as a junior naval aide to President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) on his trip to the Paris Peace Conference, primarily because of his knowledge of French. He served with the rank of lieutenant under Wilson's personal physician, Admiral Cary T. Grayson (1878-1938). The papers record details of protocol at the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. Irving gives much social detail of formal affairs attended and the intricacies of protocol. He reports background information on French labor unrest, the high cost of living, and the fear of Bolshevist infiltration.

Alfred Victor du Pont (1798-1856) was a senior partner in E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, a gunpowder manufacturer. This collection of papers documents Alfred V. du Pont’s business affiliations, relations with other family members, and relationship with du Pont workers. The bulk is comprised of correspondence, and the collection also includes a small number of advertising circulars.

The Bauduy family was associated with the prominent du Pont family, who immigrated to the United States from France in 1802 and established the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, which manufactured gunpowder at mills on the banks of the Brandywine River just north of Wilmington, Delaware. Peter Bauduy (1769?-1833), a French refugee from Santo Domingo who was a partner of Eleuthère Irénée "E.I." du Pont (1771-1834). This collection contains correspondence of Hélène Bauduy (1806-1881), Peter Bauduy's daughter, and Alexandre Aristide Bretton de Chapelles (1799-1850), and a journal kept by Eulalia Keating (1801-1873), Bauduy's daughter-in-law.

The Bauduy family was associated with the prominent du Pont family, who immigrated to the United States from France in 1802 and established the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, which manufactured gunpowder at mills on the banks of the Brandywine River just north of Wilmington, Delaware. Peter Bauduy (1769-1833), a French refugee from Santo Domingo who was a partner of Eleuthère Irénée "E.I." du Pont (1771-1834). The bulk of the collection consists of letters from Juliette Bauduy (1773-1837) to her daughter Mimika (1793-1855). Also included are letters from Peter and Juliette to her sister and the Bauduy children to their aunt.

He was an advocate for a national educational system and promoted Franco-American trade relations. Françoise (Robin) Poivre (1748-1841) was the second wife of Pierre Samuel. Françoise Julienne Ile de France (Poivre) Bureaux de Pusy (1770-1845) was a daughter from Poivre's first marriage. This collection includes a small selection of correspondence, including details on the family's immigration to the United States from France and Bureaux de Pusy's financial problems.

Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours was a French political economist, writer, publisher, and public administrator. He was an advocate for a national educational system and promoted Franco-American trade relations. Francoise (Robin) Poivre du Pont was his second wife. His grandson, Samuel Francis du Pont (1803-1865) was a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy and fought in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. This collection consists of twenty-three photocopied letters, primarily from Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817), but also Francoise du Pont de Nemours (1748-1831) and Samuel Francis du Pont (1803-1865). The correspondence is primarily to Marie Anne Lavoisier Thompson (1758-1836), a French chemist and close friend of the family.

DuPont Allied Business Firms records

Abstract:

Several early companies, established by members of the du Pont family, operated on the Brandywine Creek in proximity to the mills of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. These businesses included factories that produced tanned leather, woolen and cotton cloth, and yarns. The firms also owned properties that were used by, or sold to, other developers of mills in the region. This collection includes the papers of Du Pont, Bauduy & Company (1803-1815); Du Planty, McCall & Company (1813-1837); Brandywine Mill Seat Company (1798-1854); A. Cardon & Company (1824-1833); and Rockland Manufacturing Company (1825-1856).

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company was organized in Paris in 1801 by Pierre Samuel "P.S." du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) and his son Eleuthère Irénée "E.I." du Pont (1771-1834) for the manufacture of gunpowder. Included here are records of the firm collected by P.S. du Pont and separated from the main body of company records.

In 1801, French immigrants Eleuthère Irénée "E.I." du Pont (1771-1834) and his father Pierre Samuel "P.S." du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) organized the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company (alternatively referred to as the DuPont Company) in Paris for the purpose of manufacturing gunpowder in the United States. The next year E.I. du Pont purchased a mill site on the banks of the Brandywine Creek just north of Wilmington, Delaware, and the company would grow to be the preeminent gunpowder company in the United States for the next century. This collection comprises the nineteenth-century records of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. extending to the date of the second incorporation of E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. in 1902. The company's twentieth-century records, with the 1902 reincorporation as the dividing point, are described in a separate finding aid as E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. twentieth-century records (Accession 0500.II).

Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) was the founder of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. The collection contains original love letters from du Pont to his wife, Sophie (Dalmas) du Pont (1775-1828). He writes of how much he loves his wife and misses her when away. English transcribed extracts of several letters were done by their daughter, Sophie Madeleine du Pont (1810-1888).

Exposition Coloniale Internationale de Paris photographs

Abstract:

The Paris Colonial Exposition was a six month exhibit held outside of Paris, France in 1931 displaying the culture and resources of the colonial possessions of France. Opening May 6, 1931, the exhibition was visited by an estimated crowd of seven to nine million people. This collection includes twenty eight photographs of architectural renderings of buildings at the exposition, two photographs of models of buildings, six photographs of the actual buildings (some under construction), and one portrait photograph of M. Marcel Oliver (circa 1880s-1940s), an organizer of the event and former Governor-General of Madagascar. Each photograph is stamped on the back and has the name of the architect responsible.

Francis Gurney du Pont (1850-1904) was the youngest son of Alexis I. du Pont (1816-1857) and Joanna Smith du Pont (1815-1876), and grandson of Éleuthère Irénée "E.I." du Pont (1771-1834), founder of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company. The papers consist of du Pont's student lecture and laboratory notes; letters; technical notes and papers; records of gunpowder production; patent specifications and drawings; patent correspondence; and printed patents related to gunpowder.

Francoise Robin du Pont (1748-1841) was the second wife of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817), a prominent French political economist, writer, publisher, and public administrator. This small collection of du Pont's papers (copies) consist primarily of correspondence to her relatives in Lyon, France between 1804 and 1834, there are some additional papers such as a legal document, a handcopied poem, a medical receipt, and two tributes to her first husband, Pierre Poivre (1719-1786).

French exhibit at the Exposicion Internacional del Centenario album

The Exposicion Internacional del Centenario commemorated the centennial of the May Revolution in Argentina and its consequent independence from Spain. It was an international exhibition that was held in 1910 between May and November in the capital of Buenos Aires. The photographs in the album consist of views of France's exhibit and include the exterior and interior of the pavilion.

Jean Xavier Bureaux de Pusy (1750-1806) was a military engineer and politician, including serving in the Estates General of 1789. This collection consists of six letters from Bureaux de Pusy to Marie Charles Cesar Fay, Comte de Latour-Maubourg (1756-1831), who had been interned with La Fayette (1757-1834). The letters contain references to La Fayette and his wife, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817).

Jules Guex journal

Jules Guex (1833-1918) was a Swiss national who was caught in the German siege of Paris from September 1870 to January 1871. He and his wife, Louise Adele Begue Guex (1839-1884) helped to organize a Swiss ambulance in the Collège Chaptal (now the Lycée Chaptal). His activities in rescuing the wounded enabled him to view the movements of both French and Prussian troops. In this 250-page journal Guex describes the siege of Paris from September 19, 1870 to January 28, 1871 during the war between France and the German states (North German Confederation led by Prussia) which began in July 1870. It reports on the establishment of the Paris Commune, a socialist government, which lasted from March to May of 1871.

Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) was a French political economist, writer, publisher, and public administrator. He was an advocate for a national educational system and promoted Franco-American trade relations. This is a printed copy of the third edition of La philosophie de l'univers (The Philosophy of the Universe), written by du Pont de Nemours in 1799, redated to 1814, with numerous revisions and additions in the form of annotations and interleavings. It is much more introspective than earlier editions and reveals a good deal about du Pont de Nemours' worldview as he was approaching the end of his life. The revised text is part philosophy and part memoir and includes long sections about death, religion, gender, and reincarnation that were not present in earlier editions.

The Lainé family was related to Peter Bauduy (1769-1833) a French refugee from Santo Domingo who was a business partner of Eleuthère Irénée "E.I." du Pont (1771-1834) of the DuPont Company. The family papers contain items from several generations and include a diary from Pierre-Francois Lainé's (1775-1846) captivity in Russia, Francois Damas Laine'ś (1823-1901) diary from his visit to France, Marie Lainé Santa Maria's (1866-1961) memoirs as a child living on a sugar plantation in Cuba, translation, and typescripts of the diaries, and genealogical information.

His son, Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), established E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., a black powder manufacturer, on the Brandywine River in Delaware. The collection contains photocopies of three letters of du Pont de Nemours du Pont to Etienne Alexandre Jacques Anisson du Perron (1749-1794) and Alexandre Brongniart (1770-1847). The letters concern printing, natural sciences, and requesting scientific journals and bulletins.

Anne Louise Germaine de Staël-Holstein (1766-1817), known as Madame de Staël, was a writer, philosopher, and politically engaged woman who survived the French Revolution and was exiled multiple times by Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). This collection contains two letters, one by du Pont de Nemours and one by de Staël. His letter was written the night the Bastille was stormed. Her undated letter concerns French relations with Sweden.

This collection contains three photocopied documents in French: a memoir by du Pont de Nemours, letter of Eustache Briux to Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord, and a letter from Victor du Pont to Talleyrand.

This is one letter from du Pont de Nemours to President James Madison (1751-1836) thanking him for his assistance with obtaining travel passes and letters of introduction for his sons. In 1800, accompanied by his sons, Victor Marie du Pont (1767-1827) and Eleuthère Irénée "E.I." du Pont (1771-1834), he arrived in America. This item is a letter to Jean-Barthélemy Lecouteaulx de Canteleu (1746-1818) concerning a newly invented brocade loom.

Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) was a French political economist, writer, publisher, and public administrator. Louis Marie de La Revelliere-Lepeaux (1753-1824) was a member of the French government in the time surrounding the French Revolution, including the Estates-General, the National Convention, and the French Directory. The letter from du Pont to La Revelliere-Lepeaux concern's du Pont's son Victor, who was then serving as French consul at Charleston, South Carolina.
