Biographical Note
The Lainé family was related to Peter Bauduy (1769-1833), a French refugee from Santo Domingo who was a business partner of Eleuthère Irénée "E.I." du Pont (1771-1834). Du Pont immigrated to the United States from France in 1802 and established the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, which manufactured gunpowder at mills on the banks of the Brandywine River just north of Wilmington, Delaware.
Pierre François Lainé (1775-1846) was the son of Pierre François Lainé (1745-) and Marie Bunet (dates unknown). He married Jeanne-Baptist Josephine Leonard (1800-1861). The couple had four children: Matilde Marie (1822-1845), François Damas (1823-1901), Marie-Adelaide (1826-1853), and Honore (1827-). Lainé was held captive in Russia from July to November 1814, likely in connection to the Napoleonic Wars.
François Damas Jean Lainé (1823-1901) was the son of Pierre François Lainé and Jeanne-Baptist Josephine Leonard. He married first, Eulalie Bretton des Chapelles (1824-1855). She was the daughter of Alexandre Aristide Bretton des Chapelles (1799-1850) and Hélène Bauduy (1806-1881), daughter of Peter Bauduy. The Bauduy family had moved to Cuba from Delaware in 1819 where they resided on a sugar plantation called Eden Park.
In 1857, Lainé married his second wife, Marie Eulalie Garesché (1832-1905). She was the daughter of Jean Pierre Garesché (1780-1861) and Felicite Cora Bauduy (1796-1870). Marie Garesché was born in Wilmington, Delaware, and came to Cuba with her parents in 1856. The couple had six children: Eulalia Marie (1860-1862), Honore François (1864-1928), Damaso Teodor (1866-1938), Marie Josephine (1866-1961), Bauduy José (1867-1939), and Albert Tomas (1871-1950).
François Damas Laine managed Eden Park, a sugar plantation in Navajas, Cuba, owned by his former mother-in-law, Hélène Bauduy des Chapelles. The family resided on the plantation until the revolution in 1896 when their home was burned, and the family returned to the United States.
Marie Josephine Laine (1866-1961), the daughter of François Damas Laine and Marie Eulalie Garesché, married Adolfo Ines Bretton Santa Maria (1857-1939) in 1887.
