Avon Products Inc. photographs and audiovisual materials

Abstract:

Avon Products, Inc. is a manufacturer and direct selling company of beauty products. It is one of the oldest direct selling companies in America. The company was founded in 1886 by David H. McConnell (1856-1937) as the California Perfume Company (CPC). McConnell established a manufacturing headquarters and research laboratory in Suffern, New York, in the 1890s. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, CPC expanded its line of products to include cosmetics, household cleaners, food flavorings, and toiletries. The collection consists of photographs, negatives, slides, films, videos and sound recordings date from 1856 to 2000. The materials depict Avon products, their manufacture, packaging and sale, Avon employees and representatives and the offices, laboratories, factories and other structures owned by Avon Products, Inc. The collection is organized into ten series: Administration, Conferences, Non-sales employees, Domestic locations, International locations, Public relations, Sales managers and representatives, Selling methods and sales aids, Company history and philosophy, and Library, music, and museum.

Abstract:

Beech-Nut Packing Company produced foods such as smoked ham and bacon. The company was founded in 1891 in Canajohaire, New York, as the Imperial Packing Co. This is a small collection of photographs that depict employees at work, many of whom are women. The images date from 1905 through the 1910s.

Catalyst Inc. is a global nonprofit headquartered in New York City that is dedicated to advancing women in the workplace through research, consulting and advisory services, and outreach initiatives geared toward driving positive change. It was founded in 1962 by feminist author and advocate Felice N. Schwartz (1925-1996). Areas of focus have included workplace flexibility, dual-career families, and childcare; women on corporate boards and in leadership positions; diversity, equity, and inclusion issues; sexual harassment; the gender pay gap; and unconscious bias. The Catalyst Inc. audiovisual materials document Catalyst's media appearances, speeches, and events. The largest portion of the collection relates to the Catalyst Awards Dinner and Conference from 1980 to 2010.

This collection consists of records dating from Catalyst's early days in the 1960s until 2018. These materials include administrative and presidential papers, materials documenting Catalyst's founding and early activities, original research, publications and reports, marketing and publicity materials, media clippings, and files connected to the organization's work with Catalyst Supporters. The collection also includes documentation of the Catalyst Awards. Of note is an extensive vertical subject file originally maintained by Catalyst's library (later called the Information Center) that offers insight into topics of interest to the organization.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company Cellophane Division cellophane packaging photographs and sales materials

Abstract:

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. While cellophane was invented in Switzerland, it was not until DuPont acquired the patent in 1923 that allowed DuPont scientist William Hale Charch (1898-1958) to improve it so that it was impervious to water vapor. DuPont produced cellophane until 1986. This collection consists of undated photographs, one saleman's album, and one poster that all relate to cellophane packaging.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, Inc., Carney's Point Works and workers housing panoramic photographs

Abstract:

The DuPont Company purchased the land for a smokeless powder plant at Carney's Point, New Jersey (across the Delaware River from Wilmington, Delaware) in 1890. In 1892 it produced its first guncotton, and then the first smokeless powder. This collection consists of twenty panoramic photographs of Carney's Point smokeless powder plant, including exteriors of various buildings and groups of workers.

Greenwood Book Shop photographs

Abstract:

The Greenwood Book Shop was an independent bookseller founded by Alice Steinlein (1880-1965) in 1920 after her husband died from tuberculosis. That same year, she hired Gertrude Kruse (1900-1981) as a clerk. Steinlein retired in 1945 and the business was eventually bought by Kruse. These photographs document the interior of the Greenwood Book Shop in the Delaware Trust Building, 917 Market Street, Wilmington, Delaware.

Indiana Ordnance Works, Ballistics Laboratory photographs

Abstract:

The Indiana Ordnance Works was built by the DuPont Company for the U.S. Government beginning in 1940. It manufactured military explosives, propellants, and smokeless powder. This collection consists of photographs of the Ballistics Lab of the Indiana Ordnance Works.

John B. Stetson Company photographs

Abstract:

The John B. Stetson Company was a manufacturer of hats. The company was founded in 1865 by John B. Stetson (1830-1906) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The company's Kensington plant consisted of twenty-five buildings covering nine acres at Germantown and Montgomery Avenues. During its heyday in the 1920s it employed over 5,000 people to make its hats. This is a small collection of photographs and other material relating to the company. The photographs focus on the workers in and around the factory and its amenities.

Pennsylvania Railroad women workers' oral histories

Abstract:

The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) was chartered in 1846 to completing an all-rail road across the state. Between 1855 and 1874, the PRR underwent rapid expansion and emerged as one of the two largest railroad systems in the area east of the Mississippi and north of the Ohio. This collection consists of two interviews conducted in 1998 in West Chester, Pennsylvania with five women who worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Resources for Women (RFW) was a consulting company founded by Sarah W. Risher (1941-2019) that provided training programs to government agencies through the Federal Women's Program (FWP), as well as clients in the private sector. This small collection consists of a binder containing materials documenting training workshops offered by Resources for Women. The binder was divided into four sections: Assertive Training, Speech Communication, Human Resource Development: Racial and Cultural Awareness, and Career Development.

Ruth Leverenz Avon Products scrapbook

Ruth (Bury) Leverenz (1912-2006) was a top Avon Sales Representative for twenty years, from 1958 to 1978. Avon Products, Inc. is a manufacturer and direct selling company of beauty products. For many years Leverenz was the number one sales representative in her district and won numerous sales campaigns. During Leverenz's time as an Avon Representative, she compiled sixty pages of historical communications from the company into a scrapbook. The collection provides insight into methods of direct selling, the daily work of an Avon representative, and the experience of women in small business.

Therese Olmsted (1931-2021) worked for Avon Products, Inc. as a sales representative, later becoming a district manager. Avon Products, Inc. is a manufacturer and direct selling company of beauty products. It is one of the oldest direct selling companies in the United States. This small collection consists of instructional audio recordings about Avon cosmetics and recordings of Avon-sponsored holiday music (e.g., birthday, Christmas, New Year's, sales meetings). The Avon cosmetics instructional audio recordings are part of a set called "Avon Beauty Course." This collection contains parts 4 through 7, covering the following topics: Makeup, Bathing & Grooming, Fragrance, and Family Needs. The holiday music consists of popular and classic music performed by symphony orchestras or by popular musicians of the day, such as Peggy Lee and Elvis Presley.

The Allentown Non-Freezing Powder Co. built this plant in 1903 to manufacture commercial explosives using its proprietary ingredient, nitrostarch. The panoramic photograph shows employees of the Trojan Chemical Company explosives plant in Seiple, Pennsylvania.

Willard H. Watkins photographs

Abstract:

Willard H. Watkins (1874-1953) was a chemist and manager of the Application Laboratories for the Calco Chemical Division of the American Cyanamid Company. This small collection mainly consists of photographs depicting interior views of the chemical plant of the Allied Chemical and Dye Corporation in Buffalo, New York. These images show laboratory interiors with men and women working, dating to around the 1920s.

The collection consists of four World War II posters related to women in the workforce. Women on the Home Front worked in war industries and volunteered for war-related organizations, excelling at historically male-dominated trades such as welding, riveting, and engine repair. Their contribution was essential for the production and supply of wartime goods.

Scope and Contents:

The Women’s Department was founded in about 1944 and continued into the mid-1970s, led by Louise Bushnell (1909-1986). The material in this series document NAM’s efforts to recruit women and frame its positions in such a way as to meet the concerns of women. It includes programs and information kits, as well as Program Notes, a monthly informational pamphlet, directed towards women’s clubs across the country.
