Biographical Note
James Quinn du Pont (1902-1973) spent much of his career with the Public Relations Department of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company (also known as the DuPont Company). He joined the company in 1940 in the Engineering Department at Clinton, Iowa. After work on several projects, including the atomic bomb plant at Hanford, Washington, he transferred to Wilmington, Delaware. In 1948, he joined the Extension Division of the Public Relations Department. He served as its Atlantic District manager until 1952, when he became the administrative assistant of the Public Relations Department.
While with the Public Relations Department, du Pont traveled throughout the country presenting speeches to the public and to company employees. Among his most popular speeches were "The Du Pont Company's History with a Personal Slant" and "Patterns for Success." The latter speech concerned ten keys, graphically displayed, to a successful business. He also delivered a radio talk for Edward R. Murrow's program, "This I Believe," which was also published. He retired in 1967.
Beyond the DuPont Company, James du Pont was active in the Delaware Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Civil War Centennial Commission of the State of Delaware. He served as a trustee of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and as a director of Delfi Capital Sales, Inc., a Wilmington investment company.
