 Sub-Series
Accession: 1803Identifier: 1803-I.-F.

Dates

  • Creation: 1940-1961

Scope and Contents

Series I, Subseries F contains the records of the Television Section. DuPont's use of television is one of the best documented areas of the collection. The records contain information on the television programs created by DuPont and its advertising agency, Batten, Barton, Durstine, and Osborn, Inc. (BBDO). The files include background reports and other information on the programs created by DuPont: Cavalcade of America, DuPont Cavalcade Theater, DuPont Theater, Norman Sper and his Football Forecasts, Frank Leahy and his Football Forecasts, and DuPont Show of the Month. Playbills from the Cavalcade of America radio show (1935-1953) are included. Many of the materials are research reports and surveys written by BBDO and other research organizations, including Gallup and Robinson, A.C. Nielsen Company, and Dr. John Dollard, a research psychologist from Yale University. The topics of the reports include: analysis of the appeal of individual episodes to male and female viewers, DuPont's use of the new medium of television, and the effect of viewing the program on people's attitudes toward DuPont and big business in general. Also included is correspondence between BBDO and DuPont regarding the research reports, ratings information, and production of the programs. The correspondence provides insight into what DuPont wanted to achieve with its television programs and advertising. Scripts of some of the Cavalcade and DuPont Show of the Month programs and of the commercials for DuPont products that were shown during the breaks are also contained in the collection.

The records are arranged into further subseries by program, with a subseries of general television records at the end on DuPont's use of television, but not related to any specific program. The general television files include documents relating to a lawsuit brought by Four Star Productions against two former employees who left to start their own production company and subsequently won a contract with DuPont to produce sixteen television shows. Also included are more reports and surveys on DuPont's use of television, and proposals submitted by individuals and production companies for programs that should be sponsored by DuPont.
