Biographical Note
Jim Culley (1944-) is a retired marketing and communications professional. He was the senior director, corporate communications at Hologic, Inc., a medical technology company primarily focused on women's health, for nearly twenty years.
From 1973 to 1985, he was an associate professor and associate dean of the College of Business and Economics at the University of Delaware. His 1983 textbook Marketing Management Foundations and Practices for a time became the second best-selling textbook for MBA marketing courses.
Culley spent thirteen years with the DuPont Company, from 1984 to 1996, working primarily as a consultant to the Textile Fibers Department from the Wilmington, Delaware, and Chestnut Run facilities. During this time, he served as senior marketing research programs manager in the Corporate Marketing and Business Research group of DuPont Corporate Communications.
From 1990 to 1996, Culley was international business coordinator for carpet fibers; he then took on the job of national accounts manager for five of the nation's six largest carpet mills, as well as for strategic carpet retailers including Sears, Home Depot, New York Carpet World, CarpetMax, and CarpetOne.
In 1996, when medical products spun off from DuPont, Culley left Textile Fibers and moved with the x-ray imaging business. He led the communications effort when Hologic, Inc. launched digital radiography, digital mammography, and 3D mammography (breast tomosynthesis.) He led a team that produced hundreds of e-Broadcasts, stories, and award-winning videos detailing how customers benefited from using Hologic imaging products. For nearly twenty years he commuted weekly from Delaware to Boston to work for Hologic.
Culley comes from a family of marketers. During the 1930s, Culley's father, Ray Culley (1904-1983), was an actor and director in Hollywood making b-level cowboy and mystery movies. His mother, Betty Buehner Culley (1914-2016), was a film editor. The couple founded Cinecraft Productions in 1939. Cinecraft was one among hundreds of production houses in the U.S. during the middle decades of the twentieth century that specialized in motion pictures commonly referred to as non-theatrical, industrial, business, and sponsored films. While ownership has changed twice since its founding, Cinecraft is still in business and claims itself to be the "country's longest standing corporate film and video production house."
