Albert Lawrence "Larry" Luther (1895-1966) was a powerhouse operator for Southern California Edison Co. (SCE), a utility company that in 1917 merged with Pacific Light and Power Corporation. The centerpiece of the merger transferred ownership of the Big Creek hydroelectric project to SCE. Big Creek eventually became one of the world's largest hydroelectric projects. Luther's photograph album is from his time working for Southern California Edison Co. during the Big Creek hydroelectric project between 1917 and 1920. The images depict work and leisure, with captions written by Luther between 1917 and 1920.

Biographical Note
Albert Lawrence "Larry" Luther (1895-1966) was a powerhouse operator living in Cascade, Fresno, California, between 1917 and 1920. Luther was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Rose Helling Luther (1868-1907) and Charles Luther (1864-1936). He married Selma Riemenschmeider (1893-1984) in 1923 in Michigan and then moved to Cleveland, Ohio. He worked as an electrician for the street railway before becoming a foreman power. In 1920, he lived with his friend Harry M. Moore (1888-1953), also a powerhouse operator. Moore was from Pennsylvania. Harry Moore and Ruth Moore (1893-1968) married in 1917 and divorced in 1920. Harry Mitchell Moore remarried in 1926 to Dorothy E. Moore (1897-1995), and became an electrician for the Modesto Irrigation District for twenty-eight years.

This photograph album is from Luther's time working for Southern California Edison Co. during the Big Creek hydroelectric project between 1917 and 1920. The images depict work and leisure, with captions written by Luther.

The photographs show transformers, station lights, power board, breaker board, exciter motor, condensers, power transformer cooling coils, switch rooms, and dams. There are a few photographs of other utility companies such as California Oregon Power Sys., Keno Power House, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. Newark Substation, and Idaho Power Company equipment.

Leisure photographs feature Luther's friends and family, including Harry Moore, his first wife Ruth Moore, and their son Edward Moore. Miller (aka "Bones"), Beatrice Darak(?), Dora Darak(?), Evelyn Morey, Charles P. Beagle, Violet & Ruby, Jessie Sturges, Julia Walthour, Marion Robins, Dorothy Robins, "Jimmie "The Crumb" (Robbins), Z.P. Melcon (or perhaps Nelcon), his wife and daughter.
Places depicted are primarily in California: Huntington Lake, Kaiser Peak, Mammoth Pool, Jackass Rock, San Joaquin Bridge and River, Twin Peaks Yosemite, Starensen Creek Falls, Pittman Creek, Castaie Canyons, Eagle Rock, West Portal Yosemite Valley, and interiors and exteriors of Huntington Lake Lodge. There is a trip to Alabama, Idaho, and Utah.
There are few views of the Magundon switching station for Big Creek Lines and the San Joaquin & Eastern Railroad (SJ&E) tracks.
