P 111.7e11 American Museum of Natural History - East African expedition, 1966-1968
Interest in East Africa aroused by meeting the director of Tanzania National Parks through Col. Charles A. Lindbergh. Arrangements made to visit in 1967 along with M/M Victor Hasselblad. Trip arranged both to photograph birds and to make a photographic safari in the wild game districts. Discussion of making a second trip that does not appear to have occurred.

Decision of Greenewalt to participate in a New Guinea expedition organized by Dr. Charles Sibley, Yale University-Peabody Museum of Natural History. Greenewalt served as photographer of bird species collected by this group. Extensive arrangements to assemble the necessary equipment and to provide local facilities necessary to carry out this work. The first trip was made in 1969, followed by a second in 1971.

Greenewalt made trips to Australia and New Guinea in 1971 and 1973 to photograph native birds. Arrangements, schedules, and itineraries were made. Records of expenses are included. Correspondence with friends and contacts at the sites visited in the trip. Also contains a list of bird species photographed.

Greenewalt formed a long-lasting friendship with William S. Peckover, who worked for the territorial government in Port Moresby, New Guinea. Peckover was an active ornithologist and assisted Greenewalt in arrangements for subsequent trips, as well as exchanging information about birds in New Guinea.

George was manager of the Hallstrom Park Bird of Paradise Sanctuary. Greenewalt established contact with him during earlier visit to New Guinea. Many arrangements for later trips were made through him, and George also helped to locate birds for Greenewalt’s photography.
