P 111.7e3c American Museum of Natural History - Brazil expedition - Dr. Ruschi, 1965-1993
Dr. Augusto Ruschi was a Brazilian naturalist who established and maintained a private biological museum in Santa Teresa, State of Espiritu Santo. Included among the exhibits at his museum was a large collection of hummingbirds native to Brazil, comprising perhaps fifty different species. Ruschi made trips to natural habitats, caught the birds, and brought them back to Santa Teresa. Greenewalt learned of this collection and made contact to arrange to photograph these species. On succeeding trips to Brazil, he always visited Santa Teresa and he supported Dr. Ruschi’s trips to expand the collection. All of this led to a nearly thirty-year exchange of correspondence, making trip arrangements, sharing information developed, etc. Ruschi was apparently a difficult personality, and Greenewalt often found himself defending and explaining.
