Biographical Note
T. Coleman (Thomas Coleman) du Pont (1863-1930) was President of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company from 1902 to 1915, and a U.S. Senator from Delaware from 1921 to 1928. E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. The company was established in 1802 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) and his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834). The company began with the production of gunpowder.
He was the son of Ellen Susan Coleman (1836-1876) and Antoine Bidermann du Pont (1837-1923). Du Pont attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for engineering. He married Alice du Pont (1863-1937) in 1891; the couple had five children.
In 1902, the control of the hundred-year-old DuPont Company passed into the hands of three younger du Pont cousins, T. Coleman du Pont, Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954), and Alfred I du Pont (1864-1935).
T. Coleman du Pont, who became president after the 1902 incorporation, had spent the previous two decades involved in the coal, iron, and street railway industries of Kentucky and Western Pennsylvania. His major investment was in The Johnson Company of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and Lorain, Ohio, to which he introduced modern engineering principles and management techniques. After taking office as president of the DuPont Company, T. Coleman du Pont proceeded to acquire control over more than 100 competing explosives manufacturers. This process culminated in the formation of the so-called "powder trust," which led to a 1908 antitrust suit by the federal government. After losing this suit, DuPont was forced to divest itself of the Atlas and Hercules Powder Companies. Once the consent decree was signed, T. Coleman du Pont stepped down, and Pierre S. du Pont became president of the company.
Scope and Contents
This is a small collection of microfilm copies documenting select heirlooms of the T. Coleman and Alice du Pont family. A letter from T. Coleman du Pont to his children contains an enclosed history of the dining table purchased by his grandfather, Alfred V. du Pont (1795-1856), in 1824 or 1825. There is also an inventory for Alice du Pont (Mrs. T. Coleman du Pont), which includes drawings of certain pieces of silver.
