Abstract

James T. Mullin and Sons, Inc. was a menswear clothing store in Wilmington, Delaware. The store was founded in 1862 by James T. Mullin (1836-1896) in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and later relocated to Wilmington in 1869. James T. Mullin and Sons, Inc. expanded its locations throughout Delaware throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The records consist of a scrapbook and a box of loose material laid-in and removed for preservation purposes. The materials document the business via advertisements, mailers, newspaper clippings, and some personal family items dating between 1911 and 1955.

Historical Note

James T. Mullin and Sons, Inc. was a menswear clothing store located in Wilmington, Delaware. The store was founded in 1862 by James T. Mullin (1836-1896) in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and later relocated to Wilmington in 1869. In 1883, Mullin's son, John S. Mullin (1861-1923), became his business partner. Upon his death in 1896, James T. Mullin was succeeded as president by his son John Strickland Mullin (1861-1923) and, in turn, by his grandson J. Paul Mullin (1888-1962).

In addition to local customers in the Wilmington area, the business also served southern Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. It would send traveling representatives there every year to display the latest in men's fashion. James T. Mullin and Sons, Inc. expanded its locations throughout Delaware throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In 1978, James T. Mullins and Sons, Inc. joined with Hamburgers Clothing Store of Baltimore, becoming Hamburgers and Mullins.

Scope and Contents

The records consist of a scrapbook and a box of loose material laid-in and removed for preservation purposes. The items include advertising letters, direct mail samples, brochures, newspaper clippings, personal correspondence, certificates of award, and some personal items of the Mullin family.
