Historical Note
The Road Commissioners of Christiana Hundred were responsible for building and maintaining roads within the township. Christiana Hundred is an unincorporated subdivision of New Castle County, Delaware. It was one of the original hundreds in Delaware, created in 1682 and named after the Christina River that flows along its southern boundary. The term hundred originated in England and is defined as a division of a county. Hundreds were once used as a basis for representation in the Delaware General Assembly.
Scope and Contents
The photocopied volume contains orders to lay out and maintain roads and other deliberations of the commissioners, the accounts of the overseers for construction and repair work, and the payments of the road tax by property owners. The volume provides a look at the traditional local system of road improvement during the period in which it was being supplemented by private turnpikes and during which Christiana Hundred was becoming more industrialized with the expansion of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. powder works and the establishment of other mills. There are occasional recorded payments to E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. for blasting powder.
