- Creation: 1928-1942
The DuPont Airport was a private flying field located on the west side of Wilmington, Delaware. In 1924, a private airfield was established by Henry B. du Pont (1898-1970). Charles Lindbergh landed there in October 1927 with his famous "Sprit of St. Louis" monoplane. The airfield was host to other aviation celebrities including Amelia Earhart and Clarence Chamberlain. With Richard C. du Pont (1911-1943) and Alexis Felix du Pont Jr.'s (1905-1996) purchase of the All American Aviation Company and Henry du Pont's Atlantic Aviation in 1938, the airfield was expanded, becoming one of the most modern privately owned public-use facilities in the country. All American Aviation, through several name changes including Allegheny Airlines and U.S. Airways, continues to exist as American Airlines.
Though civil flights were restricted during World War II, the DuPont Airfield continued to prosper as a flight training site for the Navy and as a base for the Civil Air Patrol. It was an important site for the development and testing of military experimental projects. Space limitations led to the transfer of most operations following the war.
The airfield continued to operate until the late 1950s or early 1960s, although the last Atlantic Aviation Corporation flight was in June 1958. The airfield was later demolished and the site became known as Barley Mill Plaza, a research and development center and office complex. The airfield was located near the intersection of Centre Road and Lancaster Pike.
