Historical Note
Montchanin is an unicorporated community located near Greenville, Delaware. It is named for Anne Alexandrine de Montchanin (1720-1756), mother of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817), who was a French political economist and diplomat who emigrated to Delaware with his sons.
The community received a post office and permanent railroad station in 1889, at which time it became known as Montchanin. Before, the village rail stop was named DuPont Station, in honor of the nearby DuPont powder works. The village housed DuPont Company workers, and the train station became an important stop for shipping black powder to the coal fields of Pennsylvania.
The village of Montchanin, some of which was designated a historic district and is now operated as the Inn at Montchanin, grew to include not only the railroad station and post office, but also a stuccoed stone schoolhouse, a stone bank barn, a blacksmith shop, and various cottages.
