Accession: 2704Identifier: 2704-III.

Part of collection: Simon B. Camacho papers (2704)

Dates

  • From the Collection: Creation: 1859-1906

Scope and Contents

These loose papers of Camacho's include his baptismal certificate (in Spanish), a copy of his death certificate, his marriage certificate, an unsigned sketch, a poem clipped from a newspaper, his certificate of employment from the American Bank Note Company, and a small sample of correspondence, mostly written on his travels in Latin America and one when courting his wife-to-be. The correspondence is largely addressed to his mother Maria L. Skidmore Camacho and mother-in-law Emma J. Goodman Eaton. There are also letters from Francis Eaton Camacho and Simon B. Camacho to their respective mothers, in which they describe being caught in the midst of the Revolution of the Park (Revolución del Parque or Revolution of '90) of 1890 in Buenos Aires, Argentina and their support for the revolutionists. The letters written from South America in 1904 to 1905 reflect Camacho's continued mourning for his wife and his own declining health.

There is a small selection of papers from his father in the 1880s, which include the following: newspaper clipping concerning the contested will of Burtis Skidmore, the father of Maria L. Skidmore Camacho; a letter from U.S. Secretary of State James Gillespie Blaine dated 1881 December 9; an 1883 certificate presenting a medal of honor to Simon P. Camacho from the President of Venezuela Antonio Guzmán Blanco (in Spanish); three letters to his son Leopold's fiancée and later wife Anita Erwin de Camp; and a handwritten biographical account and family history of Simon P. Camacho.

The series also contains a reproduction of photographic portraits of Camacho and his wife as well as copies of newspaper obituaries of Camacho, his wife, mother, and father.
