Scope and Content
The Industrial Property Committee of the National Foreign Trade Council collected and disseminated information and developed NFTC policy concerning issues in trademark and patent issues within the U.S. and abroad. Records in this series reflect the Committee's activities in influencing revisions to patent legislation and regulations proposed by the U.S. Congress and the Department of Commerce; proposed revisions of international agreements and treaties, particularly the Paris Treaty, and attempts to standardize property rights protection, to implement reciprocal agreements, and to enforce U.S. companies' patents and trademarks in the Eastern Bloc and developing nations, including the NFTC and other U.S. groups' lobbying of the Indian government in relation to proposed loosening of patent rights to pharmaceuticals. These records also contain U.S. and foreign government reports and publications concerning export regulations related to arms and defense materiel, atomic technology, drugs and medicine, especially where such exports include sensitive high technology under patent to U.S. companies, along with publications of other companies and agencies, and press clippings. Records include correspondence with international groups including the International Cooperation Administration, United International Bureaux for the Protection of Intellectual Property [BIRPI], and the World Intellectual Property Organization [WIPO].
