Historical Note

The Studebaker Corporation was an automobile manufacturer headquartered in South Bend, Indiana. Founded in 1852 and incorporated in 1868 as the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company, it began as a manufacturer of wagons, buggies, carriages, and harnesses. After the turn of the century, Studebaker eased its way into the automobile market with an electric car in 1902, followed by gasoline-powered cars in 1904.

Studebaker Corporation was formed in 1911 by a merger of Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Co. and Everett-Metzger-Flanders Co. The Great Depression and questionable management led Studebaker into receivership in 1933. During World War II, Studebaker produced engines and vehicles for the military.

In 1954, the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit purchased its business and assets to form Studebaker-Packard Corporation, which reverted its name to Studebaker Corporation in 1962. The competition from the "Big Three" auto manufacturers was too great for the company to stay in business. The South Bend plant closed in 1963, and the last car was produced in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1966.

Financial problems continued after the war, and the company's final year in business was 1966. It was dissolved in 1967.
