Historical Note
Le jardin des Plantes remains one of France's premier botanical gardens. As one of the Musée national d'histoire naturelle's seven departments, it spans 28 hectares at is located in the 5ème arrondissement, Paris, on the left bank of the river Seine. The garden was founded in 1626 and planted in 1635 by Guy de La Brosse, Louis XIII's physician. It was originally known as the Jardin du Roi and opened to the public in 1640. Today, it contains a botanical school that trains botanists in biotic diversity and garden construction.
Isidore Laurent Deroy (1797-1886), a nineteenth century French lithographer, created the lithograph as indicated on the object (Dessinée d'ap.net.et lith.par Deroy).
Scope and Content
This collection contains one color lithograph print and two black and white photographic prints featuring an aerial view of le Jardin des Plantes in Paris, France. The scene contains Haussmannian architectural facades, abundant green foliage organized in a grid format, a metal fence, horse-drawn carriages and figures in the foreground.
