The Winterthur estate is now known as Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library located in Wilmington, Delaware. The estate is the former home of Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969) who was born there on May 27, 1880, the son of Henry Algernon du Pont and the great-grandson of E.I. du Pont, the founder of the DuPont Company. He was a director of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company from 1915 until his death in 1969, and a member of its executive committee (1916-1943); a director of the Wilmington Trust Company (1919-1969); and a director of General Motors (1918-1944) and a member of its finance committee (1918-1937). He was a major collector of American decorative arts of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the collection, housed in his home, became the Winterthur Museum in 1951.
