Biographical / Historical
Loren Niklason (1952-) grew up in Utah and attended the University of Utah for his undergraduate education as well as a Master's degree and Ph.D in bioengineering. Following graduate school, Niklason worked a number of academic jobs, including work at the University of Michigan, Harvard, and the University of Alabama Birmingham. In 1995, Niklason applied for and was granted a patent for breast tomosynthesis. In 2006, Niklason joined Hologic and worked there to develop breast tomosynthesis and worked there until his retirement in 2016.
Scope and Contents
In this interview, Loren Niklason discusses his role in developing breast tomosynthesis. Niklason walks through the system of tomosynthesis and how it was adapted for breast imaging. Niklason provides an in-depth explanation of breast tomosynthesis, how it differed from standard mammography, and the challenges of tomosynthesis. Niklason also shares the process of working with teh FDA and other agencies throughout his time at Hologic.
