Abstract

Edward G. Bradford, II (1848-1928) was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. He married Eleuthera Paulina du Pont in 1872. This collection consists of photographs of the du Pont family and estate, as well as numerous postcards.

Biographical Note

Edward G. Bradford, II (1848-1928) was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. He received degrees from Yale College in 1868 and Reed Law in 1870. After graduation he opened his own private practice. From 1880 to 1881 he was a Representative in the Delaware House of Representatives. President William McKinely nominated Bradford for his judicial seat on April 26, 1897 and was confirmed on May 11, 1897. Bradford retired in 1918 and returned to private practice until his death in 1928. His father, Edward Green Bradford, I (1819-1884) was also a district court judge in Delaware.

On September 18, 1872 Bradford married Eleuthera Paulina du Pont (1848 - 1906), daughter of Alexis Irenee du Pont (1816-1856) and Joanna Marie Smith (1815-1876). They had five children, three daughters and two sons; Eleuthera du Pont Bradford (1873-1897), Mary Alicia Bradford (1875-1920), Edward Green Bradford, III (1878-1927), Alexis Irenee du Pont (1880-1880) and Joanna Bradford (1881-19??).

Scope and Content

This collection consists of photographs of the du Pont family and estate, as well as numerous postcards. There are invididual and group portraits; snapshots of family members and images of the family home and estate. There are also photographs of ships at sea. The postcards are primarily of Quebec, some of Ocean City, Maryland and Atlantic City, New Jersey.

This collection is open for research.

Negatives are stored offsite in cold storage (Box 2). At least 24 hours notice required to allow retrieval of these items.
