Historical Note

Decalcomania is the process of transferring pictures or designs from specially prepared paper to glass, ceramic, metal, or other material. This process was discovered around 1750 by Simon Francois Ravenet (1706-1774). Over the years the process was improved and it gained in popularity in the 1870s, which is when the term decalcomania was created. Several famous artists used the decalcomania technique, including Oscar Dominguez (1906-1957), Max Ernst (1891-1976), Hans Bellmer (1902-1975), and Remedios Varo (1908-1963). Today the term has been shortened to decal.

The American Decalcomania Company was a major decalcomania company in the early twentieth century in the United States.
