"Our American Game Birds" prints

The DuPont Company began with the manufacture of gunpowder, and particularly from about 1890 to 1930, commissioned many illustrations in oil and watercolor for advertising purposes. This collection consists of a set of eighteen color prints entitled "Our American Game Birds" from paintings by Lynn Bogue Hunt, published by E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Inc. - Sporting Powder Division. Each print has a written description on its reverse, by Edward Howe Forbush. As the set's title suggests, various game birds are the subjects of each print.

Historical Note
E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. The company was established in 1802 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours and his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont the company began with the production of gunpowder. The du Pont’s purchased a mill site on the banks of the Brandywine River just North of Wilmington, Delaware. During wartime the company was a major supplier for the United States government. During peacetime, the company marketed their product towards sportsmen and hunters.
The DuPont Company, particularly from about 1890 to 1930, commissioned many illustrations in oil and watercolor for advertising purposes. Lynn Bogue Hunt, a master of painting birds and small game, was one artist who did much work for DuPont. "Our American Game Birds" was issued in 1917 and was available through mail-order.
Scope and Content
A set of eighteen color prints entitled "Our American Game Birds" from paintings by Lynn Bogue Hunt, published by E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Inc. - Sporting Powder Division. Each print has a written description on its reverse, by Edward Howe Forbush. As the set's title suggests, various game birds are the subjects of each print, including: canvas-back and redhead; greater yellow-legs, golden plover, and black-bellied plover; dusky grouse and ruffled grouse; upland plover and hudsonian curlew or jack curlew; wilson's snipe; virginia rail, clapper rail, coot, king rail, and sora; white-fronted goose, greater snow goose, and canada goose; golden-eye or whistler, white-winged scoter; scaup or broad-bill; wood duck, green-winged teal, blue-winged teal; brant and black brant; wild turkey; gadwall or gray duck and shoveller or spoonbill; mountain quail and california quail; pintail, black duck, and bald-pate; bob-white; ring-necked pheasant; and mallard.
