Matchbook covers have been used as a form of advertising since 1894, two years after they were patented, and since then, have attracted people who enjoy collecting them. Matchbooks were a cheap way to advertise products and services and businesses like restaurants, coffee shops and motels for the convenience of diners and overnight guests. The heyday of matchbook advertising lasted roughly from 1920 until World War II.
