Scope and Content
This subseries documents Volvo vehicles in the United States. The first Volvos to appear on American shores were privately imported, which included vehicles sold by Richard D. Harris Auto Imports, Incorporated of Studio City, California. From 1956 onwards, Volvo cars were officially sold in the United States through the following Volvo subsidiaries: AB Volvo of Detroit, Michigan (circa 1956-1957), Volvo Distributing Company of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey (circa 1956-1958); Volvo Import, Incorporated of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey (1959-1962); Volvo, Incorporated of Rockleigh, New Jersey (1963-1980s); Volvo North America Corporation of Rockleigh, New Jersey (1980s-2000s); and Volvo Cars of North America (2000s-Present).
From 1999 to 2010, Volvo's American subsidiaries were owned by Ford Motor Company. Since 2010, Volvo's American subsidiaries have been owned by Zheijiang Geely Holding Group, Incorporated. See also Ford and Geely.
