Scope and Content
This subseries documents Mitsubishi, which was built by Mitsubishi Kobe Dockyards of Kobe, Japan (1917-1921); Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Reorganized), Limited of Tokyo, Japan (1959-1970); and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation of Tokyo, Japan (1970-Present).
Founded in 1871 and originally a shipping and ship building conglomerate, Mitsubishi built its first cars in 1917, but cheaper imports from the United States quickly rendered the venture unprofitable. The company started to build commercial trucks in 1930, which is an activity that continues to the present day.
After a long hiatus, Mitsubishi reentered the car manufacturing business in 1951. The firm started out building Henry Js, Jeeps, and DKWs under license, but progressed to designing and building its own cars by 1962. In 1971, Mitsubishi established a close relationship with Chrysler Corporation when the latter purchased an interest in the Japanese firm. This relationship led to the 1985 formation of Diamond-Star Motors, a Mitsubish-Chrysler joint venture in which built Mitsubishi and Chrysler vehicles at an assembly plant in Normal, Illinois.
Mitsubishi encountered severe financial difficulties during the 1990s and 2000s. This led to DaimlerChrysler (the short lived merger of Chrysler and Daimler-Benz) divesting itself of its holdings in the Japanese firm. Mitsubishi was rescued by Phoenix Capital in 2004 and is currently owned by a group of Japanese investors. See also Chrysler, DaimlerChrysler, Eagle, and Jeep.
