MG was founded by Cecil Kimber 1924. The firm's first cars were modified Morrises, but the company soon became an automaker in its own right. Over the course of its existence, MG became a famous manufacturer of inexpensive sports cars and sport sedans.
MG also has a notably complicated history. Originally an independent company, MG has been owned the following parent companies: Morris Motors Limited (1935-1952); BMC (1952-1967); British Motor Holdings (1967-1968); British Leyland (1968-1986); Rover Group (1986-1988); British Aerospace (1988-1994); BMW (1994-2000); MG Rover Group (2000-2005); Nanjing Automobile Group (2005-2007); and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (2007-Present). The MG nameplate was also briefly discontinued in 1980 by British Leyland in 1980, but was revived by the same firm in 1982. MG cars are presently built by MG Motor UK Limited, which is a subsidiary of Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation. See also Austin-Rover, BMC, BMW, British Leyland, Leyland, Morris, Nuffield, Rover, and Shanghai.
