Scope and Content
This subseries documents Mercedes-Benz, which was built by Daimler-Benz A.G. of Stuttgart, Germany (1926-1998); DaimlerChrysler A.G. of Stuttgart, Germany (1998-2007); and Daimler A.G. (2007-Present).
Mercedes-Benz traces it origins to Karl Benz's 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen and Daimler Motoren-Gesellschaft, which started started building cars under the Mercedes name in 1901. In a deal largely prompted by Germany's post-World War I economic difficulties, Benz et Cie and Daimler Motoren-Gesellschaft signed an agreement of mutual interest in 1924, in which the two firms agreed to standardize the design, production, and marketing of their vehicles. The two firms formally merged in 1926 to form Daimler-Benz A.G., and started to build vehicles under the Mercedes-Benz nameplate.
In 1998, Daimler-Benz merged with Chrysler Corporation to form DaimlerChrysler A.G. Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler shared technology to a limited extent, but the merger proved unsuccessful. Chrysler was sold off in 2007 and Mercedes-Benz became a division of Daimler A.G. that same year.
Mercedes-Benz is presently one of the old and best-known automakers in the world. It currently builds a wide range of luxury cars, buses, and commercial buses. Mercedes-Benz is also noted for its successes in auto racing and has a long list of safety and technological innovations to its credit. See also Benz, Chrysler, DaimlerChrysler, and Maybach.
