Scope and Content

This subseries documents Maybach, which was built by Maybach Motoren-Werke GmbH of Friedrichshafen, Germany (1921-1940); the Maybach Division of Daimler-Benz AG, which was located in Stuttgart, Germany (1997-1998); the Maybach Division of DaimlerChrysler, which was located in Stuttgart, Germany (1998-2007); and the Maybach Division of Daimler AG, which was located in Stuttgart, Germany (2007-2013).

Maybach was a German manufacturer of limited edition luxury cars, which existed in two incarnations. The original Maybach concern was founded by Karl W. Maybach in 1909. Initially a manufacturer of zeppelin enigines, the firm turned its attention to luxury automobiles and introduced its first car in 1921. Although built in very small numbers, the original Maybach cars were noted for their technical innovation and opulence. The outbreak of World War II prompted the original Maybach firm to cease production of cars in 1940.

After being dormant for more than fifty years, the Maybach nameplate was revived by Daimler-Benz AG in 1997. In its second incarnation, Maybach was marketed as a limited edition luxury car that was intended to compete with Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Although Maybachs were well-known for their luxuriousness, the cars were poor sellers and few were built. Daimler AG discontinued the Maybach nameplate in 2013.
