Scope and Content
This subseries documents Lotus, which was built by Lotus Engineering Company of Hornsey, England (1951-1959); Lotus Cars Limited of Cheshunt, England (1959-1966); and Lotus Cars Limited (1966-Present).
Lotus is a renowned British manufacturer of racing cars and road-going sports cars. Founded by Colin Chapman in 1951, the firm initially concentrated on racing cars, but started building road-going cars in 1957. Lotus is very well-known for its success in Formula 1 auto racing, winning the World Drivers' Championship and Constructors' Championship six and seven times respectively. The firm has also collaborated with numerous automakers, including Ford, Chrysler Europe, and Toyota.
Originally an independent company, Lotus has often been in financial trouble. This has led to the firm being owned by the following parent companies: General Motors Corporation (1986-1993); Romano Artiolo/Bugatti (1993-1996); and its current owner Proton (1996-Present). See also General Motors and Proton.
