Scope and Content
This subseries documents Innocenti, which was built by Stà Generale per L'Inustria Metalurgica e Meccanica of Milan, Italy (1961-1975) and Nuova Innocenti S.p.A. of Milan, Italy (1976-1996).
Founded in 1946 by Fernando Innocenti and originally a manufacturer of motor scooters, the firm started building cars in 1961. From 1961 to 1976, Innocenti built cars under license from BMC and British Leyland. From 1977 to 1996, the firm built rebodied and rebadged versions of cars from British Leyland, Daihatsu, and Fiat.
Originally an independent firm, Innocenti was owned by the following parent companies over the course of its existence: British Leyland (1972-1975); De Tomaso (1975-1990); and Fiat S.p.A. (1990-1997). Fiat S.p.A. discontinued the Innocenti nameplate in 1997. See also BMC, British Leyland, Daihatsu, De Tomaso, Fiat, Leyland, and Mini.
