Scope and Content

This subseries documents Chevrolet, which was built by Chevrolet Motor Car Company (1911-1918) and the Chevrolet Division of General Motors Corporation (1918-Present). Chevrolet was co-founded by Louis Chevrolet and William Durant. At the time of Chevrolet's founding, Durant had recently been ousted from General Motors and was seeking to regain control by introducing a low-cost car. Differences between the company's co-founders led Louis Chevrolet leaving the firm in 1915.

That same year, Chevrolet introduced the Four-Ninety, which was the company's answer to the Ford Model T. This car was very successful and proceeds from its sales allowed Durant to secretly buy a controlling interest in General Motors in 1916. Durant subsequently merged Chevrolet into General Motors as a separate division in 1918. Chevrolet is presently a maker of low priced, medium priced, and performance vehicles in General Motors' product hierarchy. See also General Motors and Geo.
