Scope and Content
This subseries documents Bugatti, which was built by Automobiles E. Bugatti of Molsheim, France (1909-1956); Bugatti Automobili S.p.A. of Campogalliano, Italy (1991-1995); and Bugatti S.A.S. of Molsheim, France, which is a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG (1998-Present).
The original incarnation of Bugatti was founded by Ettore Bugatti in 1909 and was a world famous manufacturer of performance and luxury cars. Automobiles E. Bugatti ceased production of cars in 1952, but the Bugatti nameplate was purchased by Hispano-Suiza in 1963 and discontinued soon afterwards.
The Bugatti nameplate was purchased by Romano Artioli in 1987 and he revived it by establishing Bugatti Automobili S.p.A in 1991. This firm was noted for being the manufacturer of the Bugatti EB110 sports car. Bugatti Automobili S.p.A. ceased production of cars in 1995 and was liquidated soon afterwards. Volkswagen AG purchased the Bugatti nameplate in 1998 and revived it as a French subsidiary named Bugatti S.A.S. It is presently a manufacturer of marquee high-performance cars.
