Scope and Content
This subseries documents BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke), which was built by Bayerische Motoren Werke of Eisenach and Munich, Germany (1928-1939) and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG of Munich, Germany (1952-Present). Founded as Bayerische Flugzeugwerke in 1916 and renamed BMW a year later, the firm was originally a manufacturer of aircraft engines and motorcycles, but started building cars in cars in 1928. BMW temporarily ceased production of cars when World War II broke out, but continued to build aircraft engines for the German war effort.
After the war, BMW initially concentrated on motorcycles, but resumed automobile production in 1952. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, BMW was a noted manufacturer of microcars including the Isetta and 700. In 1962, the company introduced the BMW 1500, which is credited with establishing BMW as a world class automaker. In addition to building its own cars, BMW took over Glas GmbH in 1966 and built cars under the Glas nameplate until 1968. The company experienced further growth in 1994 when it took over the Rover Group, which included the Austin, Land Rover, MG, Mini, Morris, and Rover nameplates. BMW sold off most of the Rover Group in 2000 (including Austin, Land Rover, MG, Morris, Rover), but retained the Mini nameplate. BMW started the building the MINI Cooper in 1999. See also Austin, EMW, Frazer Nash, Glas, Land Rover, MG, Mini, Morris, and Rover.
