Scope and Content
This subseries documents Bentley, which was built by Bentley Motors Limited of London, England (1919-1931); Bentley Motors (1931) Limited of Derby, England (1933-1935); Bentley Motors (1931) of Crewe, England (1936-1971); Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited of Crewe, England (1971-1998); and Bentley Motors Limited of Crewe, England (1998-Present).
Bentley Motors Limited was founded in 1919 by W.O. Bentley. A renowned builder of prestige cars, the firm went bankrupt in 1931 and was purchased by Rolls-Royce that same year. From 1931 to 1998, Rolls-Royce operated Bentley as a wholly owned subsidiary. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited was purchased was by Volkswagen AG by 1998. After a legal dispute between Volkswagen and BMW, Volkswagen obtained sole ownership of Bentley in 2003. Bentley Motors Limited is presently a prestige make in the Volkswagen Group.
