Scope and Content
This subseries documents Audi, which was built by Audi Automobilwerke GmbH of Zwickau, Germany (1910-1939); Auto Union GmbH of Ingolstadt, Germany (1965-1969); and Audi AG of Ingolstadt (1969-Present). Founded by August Horch, the firm built its first car in 1910. Finding it difficult to survive during the Great Depression, Audi merged with DKW, Horch, and Wanderer to form Auto Union in 1932. The Audi nameplate was discontinued in 1939 on account of World War II, but Auto Union retained the rights it.
Auto Union was purchased by Volkswagen AG in 1965 and the Audi nameplate was revived that same year. Audi AG is presently an upmarket subsidiary in the Volkswagen Group. See also Auto Union, DKW, Horch, Porsche, Volkswagen, and Wanderer.
