Scope and Content
This subseries documents Alfa Romeo, which was built by A.L.F.A (Anonima Lombardo Fabbrica Automobili) of Milan, Italy (1910-1918); SA Italiana Ing. Nicola Romeo & Cia of Milan, Italy (1918-1930); SA Alfa Romeo of Milan, Italy (1930-1942); and Alfa Romeo S.p. A of Milan, Italy (1942-Present).
Founded in 1910, Alfa Romeo was originally a manufacturer of hand-built luxury cars, sports cars, and racing cars. In 1933, the firm encountered financial difficulties and was purchased by IRI (Istituto Ricostruzione Industriale), an Italian government agency, but was permitted almost complete autonomy.
Alfa Romeo shifted its focus to mass-produced cars after World War II, but still continued to build sports cars as well. The firm struggled to make a profit, which prompted the Italian government to privatize it by selling it to its present owner Fiat S.p.A. in 1986. See also Fiat.
