Scope and Contents note
This subseries concerns petitions made by automotive manufacturers for the inconsequentiality of specific safety standard violations to the actual performance and safety of their vehicles. The bulk of the materials in this subseries consist of correspondence between the Office of Chief Counsel and individual manufacturers regarding petitions for inconsequentiality. The folders also hold drafts of the legislative notices and Federal Register dockets detailing the official legislative actions taken by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in individual inconsequentiality cases.
