Historical Note

The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) is a trade organization for industrial designers that promotes the impact of design on business, culture, and society. It advocates for the profession through providing educational opportunities and is an active member of the World Design Organization.

IDSA was formed in 1965 with the merger of three predecessor organizations: the American Society of Industrial Design (ASID), the Industrial Designers Institute (IDI), and the Industrial Design Education Association (IDEA). In 1965, IDSA had approximately 600 members in ten chapters across the country. Its first chairman of the board was John Vassos (1898-1985), the founder of ADI, and its first president was Henry Dreyfuss (1904-1972); both were significant industrial designers. By 2000, the organization boasted more than 3,300 members and twenty-eight chapters.

Originally headquartered in New York City, IDSA relocated in the 1980s to the Washington, D.C., suburbs, where it remains today. There are approximately a dozen staff members at the IDSA headquarters, a board of directors, and standing and ad hoc committees that are volunteer-run.

Scope and Contents

This collection documents Brian Wynne's tenure as CEO and executive director of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) from 1977 to 1988 and as an honorary member from 2005 to 2015. Wynne's papers are organized into five series: Correspondence, ISDA studies and publications, ISDA policies and directories, IDSA conferences and events, and Affiliated organizations. Each series is arranged chronologically.

The Correspondence series consists of both incoming and outgoing letters. The correspondence from Wynne's term as IDSA CEO consists primarily of incoming letters regarding conferences, honorary memberships, sample contracts, and felicitations. There is a copy of his resignation letter and letters he received in response. There are three items related to the design and construction of IDSA headquarters in Great Falls, Virginia, in 1986. The first is a letter from Peter H. Wooding of Peter Wooding Design Associates providing his preliminary thoughts on the design concept and scope of work. The second is a project timeline from Peter Wooding Design Associates. The third is a Web Brothers, Inc. construction proposal for Oakton, Virginia. The set of correspondence titled "IDSA board of directors and headquarters upheaval" is between Wynne and IDSA executive leadership and with members of the board of directors regarding the termination of a long-time employee, mostly arguing for a fair severance package. The remaining IDSA-related correspondence is between Wynne and IDSA staff and members such as Budd Steinhilber, Ron Kemnitzer, Cooper Woodring, Richard Hollerith, Peter Lowe, Jay Wilson, Peter Bressler, Deane Richardson, Louis Nelson, Kathy McCoy, and Kristina Goodrich. The letters are often of a personal nature and include reminiscences of IDSA or current happenings at IDSA. There are exchanges related to the passing of Darrell Staley, Budd Steinhilber, and Cooper Woodring.

The ISDA studies and publications series contains compensation studies, corporate design group studies, and operating studies between 1980 and 1988. There are also several issues of Design Perspectives newsletter and examples of typical position descriptions and design contracts.

The ISDA policies and directories series is comprised of procurement manuals and employee directories. There is a communications plan and a long-range plan, an employee handbook, a policy manual, and personnel policies and producers dating from 1985 to 1988. There is a services support directory from 1987 and a directory of industrial designers from 1988.

The IDSA conferences and events series contains brochures and fliers about IDSA conferences between 1981 and 1985, the WorldDesign conference packet from 1985, and the registration form from 1988.

The Affiliated organizations series is comprised of correspondence and copies of bills related to legislation to create a U.S. Design Council Center and fund industrial design programs. It includes transcripts of testimony to the relavent House Subcommittee. There is also information about accreditation for the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and fact sheets about industrial design programs.
