Abstract

The Economic History Association (EHA) is a professional association dedicated to supporting interest in the study of economic history. EHA promotes the teaching, research, and publication of every aspect of economic history. The association was established in 1940 and is comprised of professors, students, scholars, and historians. Economic History Association records are organized into ten series: Administrative records; Preseidents' files; Secretary's files; Financial files; By-laws; Annual meetings; Memembership lists and related items; Publications; Committee on Research in Economic History; and Miscellaneous. There are several unprocessed additions. Some additions have simple inventories, while others do not. Access to these materials is at the discretion of the archivist.

The Economic History Association (EHA) is a professional association dedicated to supporting interest in the study of economic history. EHA promotes the teaching, research, and publication of every aspect of economic history. The association was established in 1940 and is comprised of professors, students, scholars, and historians. The EHA holds an annual meeting and publishes The Journal of Economic History. The journal's editorial headquarters is located in the Department of Economics at the University of Wisconsin. The association also offers various fellowships and grants for economic history research regardless of time period or geographic area. As of 2024, there are 1,000 members.

Scope and Contents

Economic History Association records are organized into ten series: Administrative records; Presidents' files; Secretary's files; Financial files; By-laws; Annual meetings; Memembership lists and related items; Publications; Committee on Research in Economic History; and Miscellaneous.

Series I., Administrative records includes organizational papers, such as the charter, incorporation, formation announcements, reports, correspondence, organizational charts, and histories. These materials date from 1937 to 1967.

Series II., Presidents' files includes the correspondence of Carter Goodrich, Frederic C. Lane, Thomas C. Cochran, E.A.J. Johnson, and George Rogers Taylor. There are also annual letters to members. These materials date from 1954 to 1966.

Series III., Secretary's files (including the Secretary-Treasurer) contains minutes and correspondence. These materials date from 1940 to 1968.

Series IV., Financial files includes ledgers of journal subscription payments, check-stub books, bank statements, and checks. These materials date from 1941 to 1948.

Series V., By-laws consists of drafts and revisions dating from 1940 to 1963.

Series VI., Annual meetings includes programs, notices, and arrangements (within correspondence and reports) dating from 1941 to 1967.

Series VII., Memembership lists and related items contains subscription lists with payments by members dating from 1943 to 1968.

Series VIII., Publications consists of correspondence, reports, editorials, articles with drafts, copyright certificates, printing bills, and data on The Journal of Economic History and Readings in Economic History. These materials date from 1941 to 1971.

Series IX., Committee on Research in Economic History (renamed the Council on Research in Economic History in 1959) includes by-laws, minutes, correspondence, administrative papers, financial papers and reports, and information on annual meetings and grants. These materials date from 1940 to 1974.

Series X. Miscellaneous consists of items concerning committees, membership drives, and meeting notices.

There are several unprocessed additions. Some additions have simple inventories, while others do not. Access to these materials is at the discretion of the archivist.

Additional materials, including four linear feet of reports and records, are not inventoried. Additional materials, including annual meeting materials for 1992 and 1995-2003, as well as EHA records for 1988-2000, are inventoried.
