Historical Note

Anheuser-Busch, Inc. (now Anheuser-Busch Companies, LLC) is an American brewing company headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. The company was founded in 1852 and changed hands several times before the partnership of Eberhard Anheuser (1806–1880) and William D'Oench (1818-1901). The company name also changed several times; between 1860 and 1875, it was known as E. Anheuser & Co., while between 1875 and 1879 it was known as E. Anheuser Company's Brewing Association.

D'Oench was the silent partner in the business until 1869 when he sold his half-interest in the company to Anheuser's son-in-law, Adolphus Busch (1839–1913). Busch began working as a salesman for the Anheuser Brewery in 1864. After purchasing D'Oench's shares in 1869 he assumed the role of company secretary until the death of his father-in-law in 1880, when Busch became company president. The company was renamed Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association the year prior, in 1879.

In 1919, the company adopted the name Anheuser-Busch, Inc.; in 1979, Anheuser-Busch Companies became a parent holding company and Anheuser-Busch, Inc. became a wholly owned subsidiary. In 2008, InBev, a brewing company based in Leuven, Belgium, acquired Anheuser-Busch, forming Anheuser-Busch InBev.

Scope and Contents

This small collection consists of three items seeking support against an upcoming Prohibition bill: an explanatory letter, a blank petition form against the bill, and a newspaper article reprint about the Dry Movement.

The letter is addressed to "Friends of our industry," and is signed by James John "J.J." Carroll (1892-1949), vice president and general sales manager of the Brewery Division at Anheuser-Busch. Carroll became the general sales manager in 1933 and was vice president by 1944; he retained both positions until his death on November 10, 1949. In the letter, he asks for support against the bill, encouraging recipients to obtain signatures on the enclosed petition form and to write for more forms if needed.

The petition form contains the header, "Petition Protesting Against the Enactment of Any and All Prohibition Legislation." The body of the text describes the Bryson bill (H.R. 2082), the negative effects of national Prohibition from 1920 to 1933, and potential similarly poor outcomes from any prohibition legislation. There is space on the bottom for signatures, addresses, and occupations.

The Bryson bill (H.R.2082) was legislation that would have prohibited the manufacture, sale, or transport of alcoholic beverages in the U.S. until World War Two was over and troops demobilized. By suspending the alcoholic beverage industry for the duration of the war the bill sought to reduce absenteeism, conserve manpower, and speed the production of materials that would aid in the war effort.

The article reprint is titled, "Drys Scheme to Put Over Prohibition Bit by Bit Before Opposition Wakes," by journalist Edward A. Harris (1910-1976). It ran in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Harris won the Pulitzer Prize in 1946. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is a regional newspaper based in St. Louis, Missouri, serving the St. Louis metropolitan area. It is the largest daily newspaper in the metropolitan area in terms of circulation.
