Henry J. Burt (1895-1970) invented a batting and pitching apparatus known as the "Pitchin' Pete" in the 1960s. Burt was a research professor at the University of Missouri and a clergyman in Newfields, New Hampshire.
Henry John Burt was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, to Alice Evelyn Waltze Barrows Burt (1857-1947) and Frederick Augustus Burt (1850-1941). He studied rural sociology at the University of Massachusetts, graduating in 1919.
He married Ruth Calista Brackett (1896-1967) in 1921; the couple had two children. After living in Missouri and New Hampshire, the couple retired to Brookfield, Massachusetts, in 1950 and lived on a farm until their deaths.
Scope and Contents
This small collection illustrates the U.S. patent application process for a batting and pitching practice apparatus known as the "Pitchin' Pete." The collection consists of the documentation required by legal offices and the U.S. Patent Office, showing the procedure for taking the product concept through the manufacturing process, as well as affiliated expenses.
In September 1963, Burt met with patent attorney Norman S. Blodgett (1921-1991) and engaged his services in patenting his batting and pitching apparatus. There are letters from Blodgett to Burt on the patent application process.
Burt's notes articulate and illustrate the product specifications. There are legal receipts and letters from the inventor to Blodgett regarding legal bills incurred and fee-related questions.
