Biographical Note

Aaron A. Maple (1866-1938) was an asbestos building supplies traveling salesman for the Ohio branch of the Asbestos Shingle, Slate & Sheathing Co., headquartered in Ambler, Pennsylvania.

Maple was born in Richmond, Jefferson County, Ohio, to Jane McLain Maple (1832–1889) and George Bowers Maple (1826–1893). He had three older brothers and a sister. He grew up working on his father's farm. Maple moved to Galion, Ohio, in 1892. He learned carpentry and became a contractor in 1895, building new homes in the area until 1920. He then began working for the Asbestos Shingle, Slate & Sheathing Co., selling asbestos building supplies, primarily roofing shingles, to contractors and lumber yards. The company also sold asbestos corrugated sheathing, linabestos wallboard, and asbestos building lumber.

In 1896, he married Bertha Mabel Aukerman Maple (1877-1940). The couple had one daughter, Sarah Georgetta "Georgia" Maple (1899–1977).

Scope and Contents

This small collection consists of Aaron A. Maple's personal diaries, which document his home life, expenses, work, and travel throughout the northern and northwestern parts of Ohio. Fourteen diaries were written during his time working for the Asbestos Shingle, Slate & Sheathing Co.

The diaries focus on Maple's daily activities. Several entries simply state, "At home writing." There is no indication of what his writing entailed. Most entries include the activities of his wife, Bertha, and their daughter, Georgia--if they went to work, church, or a social engagement with friends. Maple records daily deposits and expenses when they occur. Work-related entries include cities he travels to, if he is traveling with a co-worker or family member or alone, the hotel he stays at if an overnight trip, and the number of shingles ordered or delivered. The entries are brief and without flourish or narrative elaboration. For example, the stock market crash of 1929 occurs without mention; however, the effects of the Depression are evident in his financial recordings that demonstrate the company's declining business. The diaries date from 1920 to 1936; however, the collection does not include diaries for the years 1923, 1934, and 1935.

Additionally, the collection includes an assortment of ephemeral materials such as business cards, vehicle registrations, automobile club membership cards, insurance cards, and newspaper clippings.
